Falls from ladders and roofs are what hurt people in this trade. The service drop, handled properly

The overhead wires at the eave are the second thing that kills people here. The covering on a service drop is weather protection, not insulation, and the neutral messenger is usually bare. You learn the 10-foot approach distance for unqualified persons — measured to the far end of your ladder, pole or gutter section — and when to stop and call the utility instead.

    Lesson 1: How a Gutter System Works — and How It Fails

    A gutter is a sized channel. A 5-inch K-style trough serves roughly 5,520 square feet of roof drainage area; a 6-inch K-style about 7,960. A half-round of the same nominal size carries roughly half of that — about 2,500 square feet at 5 inches, 3,840 at 6 — since a semicircle holds less than the near-rectangular K-style section. Roof pitch multiplies that area: 1.05 at 4-in-12 to 5-in-12, 1.1 at 6/12 to 8/12, 1.2 at 9/12 to 11/12, 1.3 at 12/12 and steeper, because a steep roof delivers water to the eave faster. A 5-inch half-round on a large steep roof is undersized by design; it will overflow in a hard rain no matter how clean you leave it.

    Lesson 2: Ladders and Falls — the Risk That Defines This Trade

    An extension ladder stands at four to one: for every four feet of working length between the feet and the top support, the base sits one foot out — 29 CFR 1926.1053(b)(5)(i). That ratio produces an angle of approximately 75 degrees. Set shallower and the feet slide out; set steeper and the ladder tips backward as you lean in. Measure the working length and divide by four.

    Lesson 3: Overhead Electrical — the Hazard That Kills Quietly

    The overhead line from the utility pole to the house is the service drop. Most are triplex: two insulated aluminum phase conductors twisted around a bare neutral that also serves as the messenger carrying the span. It lands at the point of attachment, enters the service head — the weatherhead — and runs down as service-entrance conductors to the meter. Below the weatherhead each conductor is looped deliberately downward — the drip loop, which lets water follow the wire to a low point and fall off instead of running into the raceway and the connections. Ownership splits at the weatherhead: the utility's drop above, the owner's entrance below. You touch neither.

    Lesson 4: Roof Access and Walking Surfaces — and When to Stay Off

    Whether you get on the roof at all is decided from the ground, before the ladder goes up — not halfway up with a bucket in one hand. Pitch, surface, condition and weather decide it, and any one of them is enough to keep you on the ladder or send you home.

    Lesson 5: Cleaning Methods and the Tools That Fit Them

    Hand-clearing is the baseline and still the most thorough method. A plastic gutter scoop, a bucket on an S-hook or a bag clipped to the belt, and gloves rated for punctures, because troughs hold roofing nails, screws, broken glass and animal remains. Use plastic, not metal — a metal scoop gouges seam sealant and scratches the coating. The bucket hangs from the ladder: you cannot climb with it in your hand and keep three points of contact. It is what you want for heavy wet sludge and compacted debris, for anything that must be removed rather than moved, and for any job where you want eyes on the fascia, seams and drip edge.

    Lesson 6: Downspouts, Drains, and Diagnosing Flow Failures

    Start with the tap test. Run a knuckle or a tool handle down the downspout. Hollow rings clear; a dull thud is packed material. That locates the plug within a foot or so, usually at the top offset or an elbow, where the section changes direction and the crimped joint catches debris.

    Lesson 7: Inspecting and Reporting What You Find

    Every finding you report takes one form: the observation, and its consequence. You saw a soft fascia board and screws that spun in it; you did not diagnose the rafter tails behind it. That is scope, not modesty. A cleaner who issues roofing findings owns them, and one who invents urgency to sell a repair has a consumer-protection problem. Write what you saw, say what it usually means, and name the trade that should look at it.

    Lesson 8: Running the Work: Pricing, Documentation, and Insurance

    Two numbers set the price: storeys, and linear feet. National averages published in 2026 run $0.95 to $2.25 per linear foot — about $0.95 to $1.25 at one storey, $1.00 to $1.85 at two, $1.25 to $2.25 at three (Angi). By the job, Angi's average project cost runs $145 to $250 single-storey, $180 to $360 two-storey and $210 to $450 at three, against a national average of $168 with most jobs landing between $119 and $234. The all-homes average sits below the two-storey range because single-storey work pulls it down. These are national figures and regional variance is wide, so treat them as a sanity check rather than a rate card. A typical house carries 125 to 200 linear feet, which reconciles the per-foot and per-job numbers.

What you’ll learn

  • Set an extension ladder at the 4:1 ratio required by 29 CFR 1926.1053(b)(5)(i), with at least three feet of rail above a roof edge, on stable and level footing, and pick a duty rating that covers body weight plus tools and a loaded bucket.
  • Rig a standoff with a long enough arm that the ladder bears on the roof plane, and explain why resting rails on a formed aluminum trough produces both a deformed gutter and a ladder that can walk sideways.
  • Identify the service drop, point of attachment, weatherhead and drip loop from the ground, hold the 10-foot unqualified-person approach distance measured to the far end of the ladder, pole or gutter section, and shut the job down when that distance cannot be held.
  • Choose between hand-clearing, wet/dry vacuum, ground-based gutter-vac poles, blowers and pole-fed rinsing based on debris condition, eave height, roof walkability and access — including the conditions under which each one is the wrong tool.
  • Diagnose a downspout clog by tap test, hose test and discharge observation, clear it top-down, bottom-up or by taking the offset off the wall, and recognize the underground-line failures that get referred to a camera inspection instead of snaked again.
  • Read gutter anatomy and sizing: K-style versus half-round capacity, roughly 1/4 inch of fall per 10 feet toward the outlet, hangers every 24 to 36 inches and tighter in snow country, and how drip edge, fascia and soffit fit into the water path.
  • Separate a debris problem from a drip-edge, pitch, fascia or ice-dam problem, and write a condition report that states the observation and its consequence without diagnosing past what is visible from the ladder.
  • Explain gutter guard categories and their real failure modes — micro-mesh blinding over with grit, reverse-curve hoods overshooting the slot in heavy rain, foam holding moisture — and account for the removal-and-reinstall labour they add to a cleaning.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license to clean gutters?
No state licenses gutter cleaning as its own trade, and no federal agency or association issues one either. Four other things do apply. Register the business and get whatever local business license or tax certificate your city or county requires. Carry general liability, and workers' comp once you have employees — OSHA applies then too. And state home-improvement and contractor statutes have dollar thresholds that cover repair and improvement work — resealing seams, re-hanging runs, replacing fascia, installing guards. California's minor-work exemption ends at $1,000, Oregon's at $1,000 aggregate on one structure, Virginia requires a Class C license above $1,000 per contract, and Connecticut requires home-improvement registration once your contracts exceed $1,000 in any twelve consecutive months. Ask your state board in writing before you sell that work, and keep the answer.
What exactly does NISCR issue?
A Certificate of Completion. It documents that you finished this course and passed its exam. It is not a license, it is not issued or endorsed by any government agency or trade association, and it does not satisfy any licensing requirement anywhere. What it does is give you something to put in front of a homeowner or a property manager: evidence you were trained on ladder setup, overhead-line clearance, method selection and honest condition reporting rather than learning it on their house.

Does OSHA apply if I work by myself?
OSHA regulates employers. A genuinely self-employed person with no employees is not covered and cannot be cited. That is a statement about enforcement jurisdiction and nothing else. The physics do not change: CDC/NIOSH found self-employed workers die in ladder falls at about five times the rate of employees. A homeowner or their insurer can still sue you, and the OSHA standards are commonly pointed to as the reference for safe practice. The day you put one helper on a ladder, you are an employer and OSHA applies. The course teaches 1926.1053 and 1910.23 as the baseline for everyone.
What equipment do I need to start?
Not much, which is why entry costs are low relative to the ticket. A duty-rated extension ladder — fiberglass if there is any overhead service near the work — a standoff with an arm long enough to reach past the gutter onto the roof, a plastic scoop rather than metal, a bucket on an S-hook or a bag on a belt, puncture-resistant gloves, and a hose. A wet/dry vacuum is the next purchase. Ground-based gutter-vac poles come later: safer for dry debris, poor on compacted sludge, and never near a service drop.
Is the work steady, or is it all autumn?
Both. Baseline residential service is twice a year, spring and autumn, and homes under pines go quarterly because needles shed continuously. Late autumn is the peak and winter is thin, so a year-round weekly average sits well below what a good October week looks like. The recurring pattern is why the trade works as a business — the same houses come back and routes get efficient — and guards do not remove the need for service, since many manufacturers require documented maintenance to keep the warranty valid.
