    Lesson 1: Water Categories and Classes — Sizing Up the Loss

    Every water loss begins with two separate judgments, and everything that follows depends on getting them right. The category of the water describes its contamination level and drives health protections, handling, and what can be saved. The class of the loss describes how much water the structure has absorbed — the evaporation load — and drives how much drying equipment you need. Confuse the two, or guess at either, and you end up with the wrong PPE, an undersized drying system, and a callback for mold.

    Lesson 2: Safety on the Water Loss

    A water loss stacks hazards that do not exist on a normal service call: energized circuits in standing water, sewage pathogens, waterlogged ceilings overhead, and slick floors crossed by extension cords. The professional habit is a deliberate hazard assessment before anyone works — walk the exterior, interview the occupant about what happened and when, look up for sagging or ponding ceilings, and look down for standing water covering outlets and cords.

    Lesson 3: Psychrometry for Drying — Reading the Air

    Structural drying is controlled evaporation: you move moisture out of wet materials into the air, then pull it out of the air with dehumidification. To run that process on purpose instead of by luck, you need four numbers and the relationships between them — temperature, relative humidity, specific humidity, and dew point. Together they are the psychrometry of the job, and a thermo-hygrometer reads them in seconds.

    You cannot dry what you have not measured. The moisture inspection defines the true extent of the loss, sets the goals you will dry to, and creates the baseline every later reading is compared against. Rushed inspections produce undersized drying systems, missed migration, and disputes; a disciplined one takes an extra half hour and pays for itself all week.

    Lesson 5: Extraction and Demolition Decisions

    Before the first air mover starts, the cheapest drying you will ever do happens with an extractor. Removing liquid water is enormously faster than evaporating it: every gallon you extract — about 8.3 pounds of water — is a gallon that never has to pass through the air and the dehumidifier one grain at a time. Saturated carpet and pad hold on the order of a quarter gallon per square foot, so a 200-square-foot room can be sitting on roughly 50 gallons — over 400 pounds of water. Leave it in place and you have added days of equipment time; extract it and the drying system starts the job half won.

    Lesson 6: Drying System Design — Airflow, Dehumidification, and the Chamber

    A drying system has three parts that only work together: airflow to move moisture off wet surfaces, dehumidification to remove it from the air, and a defined chamber that keeps the process concentrated where the water is. Design all three deliberately and the job dries in days; improvise and you get loud equipment achieving little.

    Setting equipment is the start of drying, not the substance of it. The substance is monitoring: returning daily, measuring the same points, reading the trends, and adjusting the system until every material reaches its goal. Jobs are won or lost in these visits — a stalled system caught at hour 24 costs nothing; caught at hour 96 it costs the schedule, the margin, and sometimes the drywall.

Two technicians can dry the same house equally well; the one with a complete file collects without friction, and the one without spends weeks arguing with an adjuster from memory.
