The short answer
"HVAC certified" means three different credentials, and the path runs in a sensible order. First, learn the fundamentals — through a training course, a trade program, or a helper job. Second, pass the EPA Section 608 exam: the one federal requirement, mandatory before you can legally handle refrigerants, and administered by EPA-approved certifying organizations — not by training providers. Third, where your state requires it, earn a state HVAC contractor or mechanical license — usually after documented field experience — before contracting work in your own name.

The three credentials people call "HVAC certification"

EPA Section 608: the one federal requirement
Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release regulated refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified — everywhere in the United States, no state exceptions. This is the credential the trade means by "getting your 608."
The exam comes in sections: Core (regulations, refrigerants, safety, recovery concepts — everyone takes it) plus Type I for small appliances such as refrigerators and window units, Type II for high-pressure equipment, which covers most residential and commercial air conditioning and heat pumps, and Type III for low-pressure chillers. Where training certificates honestly fit
